About the Area
Penhook is a friendly town of about 700 people located on the south side of Smith Mountain Lake which is known as “the jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains.” We are within five minutes of a Minute Market, Dairy Queen, Carl’s Diner, the post office, banks, marinas, antique shops, country clubs, golfing, camping, stables and the Smith Mountain Dam. Right around the corner is the best car mechanic in the world. We are surrounded by peach orchards, strawberry farms, and wineries.
We are twenty minutes from the large town of Rocky Mount where there is everything you might need—Super Walmart, Lowe’s, clothing stores, furniture stores, supermarkets, a movie theater, restaurants, hotel, library, hospital, doctor’s offices, etc.
Or you can take the back roads and go to the other side of the lake where there are tourist shops, more restaurants, boating and jet-skiing rentals, miniature golf, arcades, hang gliding, para-sailing, wake-boarding, bass tournaments, boat shows, fishing, and the Virginia Dare which is a 19th century side paddle wheeler you can dine on while cruising around the lake. The lake itself encompasses three counties and 500 miles of shoreline. There is a state park where you can swim or hike. There is a private airport, a retro drive-in movie theater, art galleries, and museums such as the Booker T. Washington National Monument.
We are also ten minutes away from Leesville Lake. This lake has 100 miles of shoreline.
Gretna is in the opposite direction about fifteen minutes away. There are supermarkets, the feed store, a hotel, doctors’ offices, a movie theater and small shops.
We are an hour away from Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Danville. There are major airports in Roanoke and Lynchburg. We are 40 minutes away from Martinsville where there is NASCAR racing.
We are also close to many colleges including Virginia Tech, Liberty University, the University of Virginia, Hollins University, Ferrum College, Virginia Western Community College, Washington and Lee, Virginia Military Institute and Radford. There are also many private and religious schools.
This is a charming area that still has old timey parades down the center of town, a love for bluegrass music and back road jam sessions, and many festivals such as the Moonshine Jamboree and the Sorghum Festival.
For horse lovers, enjoy many public and private trails. If you are into showing, we are two hours away from the Lexington Horse Center and ten minutes away from the Pittsylvania County Agricultural Center which is currently under construction and will hold many horse shows and other equine activities. We are 45 minutes away from the Patrick Henry Saddle Club, the Patrick Henry Girl’s Club, Broken Bow Arena, and Green Hill Park and the Blue Ridge Horse Force. Additionally, this farm would be perfect for having its own horse shows!
No surprises - No power lines, No busy road, No junky trailers, No bad neighbors!
